I want to know Jesus Christ as my personal Savior, what do I need to do?
BEFORE WE ANSWER THAT QUESTION, THERE IS ANOTHER QUESTION WE NEED TO ASK: WHY DO YOU NEED A SAVIOR?
The reason you need a Savior is because you are a sinner (we all are), and the penalty for our sin is death and eternal separation from God. But God loves us so much that He sent His only Son to die for our sins. Jesus Christ bore the wrath of God in our place, bore the penalty for our sins, and paid that price on the cross. God raised Him from the dead three days later. It is Christ's perfect righteousness that we need to save us from the debt caused by sin that we cannot pay. That is why we need a Savior—we cannot save ourselves.
Scripture is very clear on this.
-"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)
-"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)
-"But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)
-"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9)
As you consider the question, "I want to know Jesus as my Savior. What do I need to do?" here are some things to think about:
1.Do you realize that you have sinned against a holy God and that, because of your sin, you are under His judgment?
2.Do you understand that you are incapable of freeing yourself from the debt you owe because of your sin?
3.Do you believe the gospel (the Good News)—that God the Son came in the flesh as Jesus Christ and lived the perfect life, without sin, in your place? Do you believe that He died the death you deserved on the cross, satisfying the wrath of God the Father and paying the penalty for your sins? Do you believe that He rose from the dead on the third day, defeating sin and death, and is now seated on the throne in heaven?
Paul says it this way in 1 Corinthians 15:3–4:
"For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures."
If you can say with confidence that you believe the gospel, it is because the Holy Spirit (who is God) has brought you from spiritual death to life.
So, ask yourself this question: Do I truly have faith in what is written above and, more importantly, in the Scriptures?
If you have faith in Christ Jesus, you can know with certainty that Christ will keep you and sustain you until the end (Philippians 1:6).
